Traditional use: One of the oldest culinary and medicinal spices in recorded history; used across European, Middle Eastern, and Ayurvedic traditions as a carminative for bloating and colic, a digestive tonic, a galactagogue, and a remedy for menstrual cramps and respiratory congestion.

Potential benefits: Volatile oils (carvone and limonene) exert antispasmodic, carminative, and antimicrobial effects; clinical evidence supports its use for functional dyspepsia and IBS, particularly in combination with peppermint oil for upper abdominal bloating and discomfort.

Warnings: Generally very safe at culinary and therapeutic doses; may cause allergic reactions in those sensitive to Apiaceae plants (celery, fennel, dill family); avoid concentrated essential oil internally without professional guidance; use cautiously in gastro-oesophageal reflux.
